On 28 November, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met with the EU Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier, to discuss the first developments in the exit of the United Kingdom from the EU after the European Council agreement of last 25 November on the Withdrawal Agreement and on the Political Declaration Setting out the Framework for the Future Relationship. The issues of direct Italian interest addressed were: safeguarding the rights of citizens, with a special attention for the most vulnerable groups and the protection of the geographical indication of products. Chief Negotiator Barnier confirmed the validity of the agreements reached, acknowledging the determination and coherence with which the Italian Government has upheld its legitimate interests. While awaiting the completion of the Withdrawal Agreement ratification process within the EU and the UK, the two leaders confirmed the importance to continue to also prepare for a No-Deal Brexit, both at European and national level.
